Welcome to Barrowbound. We've written these Terms as clearly as we can — no legal maze, no hidden traps. By creating an account or using any part of Barrowbound, you're agreeing to what's written here. If something doesn't sit right with you, please reach out before using the service.
Barrowbound is a reading tracking and community app operated from New Zealand. When we say "Barrowbound", "we", "us" or "our" in these Terms, that's who we mean. You can reach us at hello@barrowbound.app.
Barrowbound is open to anyone aged 13 and over. If you are under 13, you are not permitted to create an account or use the service. By signing up, you confirm that you meet this age requirement.
If you're between 13 and 17, we recommend having a parent or guardian aware that you're using the app.
You must provide accurate information when creating your account and keep it up to date. One account per person — creating multiple accounts to circumvent limits or bans is not permitted.
You can close your account at any time through your account settings or by contacting us at hello@barrowbound.app.
You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure. We're not liable for anything that happens because someone else accessed your account with your credentials. If you think your account has been compromised, contact us immediately.
We reserve the right to suspend or close accounts that violate these Terms, though we'll always aim to give fair warning unless the breach is serious (such as posting illegal content).
When you close your account, your personal data will be deleted within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it by law.
Barrowbound gives you tools to track your reading, participate in challenges and games, connect with other readers, and discover new books. We aim to provide the service reliably and with care.
In line with the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, we guarantee that the Barrowbound service will be performed with reasonable care and skill and be fit for its described purpose. If we fall short of this, we'll work with you to make it right.
Barrowbound is provided as a software service and, like all technology, may occasionally experience outages, bugs, or downtime. We are not liable for losses caused by temporary unavailability of the service, provided we take reasonable steps to restore it promptly.
Barrowbound offers a Free plan and a Gold subscription. The features available on each plan are described on our pricing page and within the app.
We reserve the right to adjust what's included in each plan over time. Where changes negatively affect existing paying subscribers, we'll give at least 30 days' notice and, where appropriate, a refund option.
We will never claim a feature is available if it isn't, and we won't mislead you about pricing. All pricing is displayed in New Zealand Dollars (NZD) unless otherwise stated.
Gold subscriptions are billed monthly or annually depending on the plan you choose. Billing is handled securely through Stripe — we never store your card details.
Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period unless you cancel. You can cancel anytime through your account settings — your access continues until the end of the paid period.
Founding Member and Early Adopter pricing, once applied to your account, is locked in for as long as your subscription remains active. If you cancel and resubscribe, standard pricing applies.

Anything you post to Barrowbound — reviews, forum posts, notes, quotes, reading logs — belongs to you. You give us a licence to display and store it within the app, but we don't own it and won't sell it.
You're responsible for what you post. Content must not:
The Barrowbound name, logo, design, and all original content we create is our intellectual property. You're welcome to share screenshots of the app for personal or promotional purposes, but please don't reproduce our branding or content without permission.
Book data (titles, authors, covers, descriptions) is sourced from publicly available databases including Open Library. We do not claim ownership of third-party book data.
Barrowbound uses third-party services to operate, including Stripe, Open Library, Google Books, Formspree, Kit, Netlify, GitHub Pages, and Replit. Each of these services has their own terms and privacy policies. While we choose our partners carefully, we're not responsible for their independent conduct.
How we collect, use, and protect your personal information is covered in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms.
To the extent permitted by New Zealand law, Barrowbound's liability for any claim arising from your use of the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the three months preceding the claim.
We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses unless caused by our gross negligence or wilful misconduct. Nothing in these Terms limits your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986.
We may update these Terms from time to time. For significant changes, we'll notify you by email or in-app notification at least 14 days in advance. Continuing to use Barrowbound after the effective date means you accept the updated Terms.
These Terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand. Any disputes will be resolved under New Zealand jurisdiction.
Barrowbound will not be liable for any failure or delay in performing our obligations where that failure or delay results from events outside our reasonable control — including outages of third-party services, internet disruptions, natural disasters, or government actions.
